Performance art

Photographer Dan Winters has had the world's A-listers lining up to sit for him, including Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet and the late Heath Ledger. Perhaps it's because they know that Winters will deliver more than just another fawning publicity shot. His portraits for publications such as Time, Rolling Stone and the New York Times Magazine, are, after all, strange and transformative (see a barely recognisable Laura Dern, above). He's not interested in gazing earnestly into his sitters' souls. Instead, he likes to subvert expectations and play with their public persona, by getting them to do exactly what they're paid to do - perform.
