Mata Hari, 1917. Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, known as ‘Mata Hari’, was a dancer. In 1916 she agreed to work for the French espionage and counter-espionage service. She was arrested on February 1, 1917, accused of being a double agent in the service of Germany. She was found guilty, sentenced to death, and executed by firing squad on October 15, 1917.
