‘Robin Bell’s Silver Footprint’ at the Independent Photographers Gallery until June 20, 2009, 3 Old Brewery Yard, Battle, East Sussex, TN33 0AF
Photographers and their subjects both enjoy their fair share of scrutiny and appreciation for their part in creating an image. The all-important printers, on the other hand, get barely a look in. So, happily, here is an exhibition that celebrates all three. It collects the work of expert black-and-white printer Robin Bell, who over the last 35 years has hand-printed photographs for some of the industry's biggest names - including Norman Parkinson, John Swannell (Chair Series No 2, 1991, above) and Ernst Haas - who, in turn, have captured an unbeatable array of people, places and fashions in some of the most feted images yet to be produced.
