Pirates armed with AK-47s surround their hostages on the deck of the 'Tanit'. The Gulf of Aden, where the boat was hijacked, is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world with more than 20,000 ships passing through every year. Since the 2004 tsunami wiped out hundreds of previously prolific south-east Asian pirate fleets, the waters off Somalia have become the most pirate-infested in the world.
