Carnival Against Capitalism, London: Rioting broke out after 4,000 people armed with whistles and drums gathered in the City of London on June 18 1999 as part of a global protest against capitalism. Some demonstrators chained themselves inside major banks and caused £2m worth of damage to buildings and restaurants; others stormed the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (Liffe) building and tried to reach the trading floor, but were stopped by the building's security shields.
