May 1968, Paris: Charles de Gaulle's government was shaken to its core in May 1968 when thousands of dissatisfied students began a series of protests at universities and lycees across Paris. Subsequent battles between police and demonstrators near the Sorbonne involved barricades, tear gas and hurled paving stones. Vast demonstrations and strikes followed.
