'Global Summer' by Yiorgos Kordakis at M+B Gallery, 612 North Almont Drive, Los Angeles until January 24
"I often like to imagine the way our world looks from high above," says Greek photographer Yiorgos Kordakis. That might explain the rather distant and removed nature of his 'Global Summer' picture series. Bleached out, indistinct and taken on Polaroid film, these images (such as Global Summer #3, 2005 above) have a painterly, impressionistic feel and a levelling effect on their subject, making the hoards of people and the various beach locations to which they gravitate look remarkably generic. It's Kordakis' way of observing human behaviour from afar - by dwarfing them in a mass of light, sky, clouds and sea.
