Obama and his running mate Joe Biden defeated the Republican pairing of John McCain and Sarah Palin by 365 electoral votes to 173. The campaign slogan was 'Change we can believe in'.

In front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle wave to crowds at the 'We Are One' concert held on January 18 to celebrate Obama’s inauguration on January 20. Among the performers at the concert were Beyonce Knowles, Stevie Wonder, Jon Bon Jovi, U2 and Bruce Springsteen.
