Motown at 50
Smokey Robinson was the first star Gordy signed. His group, The Matadors, were later renamed The Miracles, and Robinson, second from right, became vice-president of the label. He was so grateful to Gordy that Robinson named his daughter Tamla and son Berry.
Right: The label's legendary Hitsville USA studio was a garage that Gordy purchased and renovated and where the distinctive 'Motown Sound' was developed.
Marv Johnson's 'Come to Me' was Tamla Motown’s first release. Originally called Tamla, the label was set up by impresario Berry Gordy with a loan of $800 from his family. He later added Motown, nickname of his home town Detroit, also known as the Motor City.
