Venice underwater
Women sit on a table in their shoe shop as the water level rises. The highest water level Venice has ever seen was in 1966 when waters reached as high as 1.76m – 66cm above the flood level.
A woman walks across St Mark’s Square which was under more than a metre of water at the height of the floods. Venetian officials say that the sea level has risen to 1.56m, well beyond the 1.10m flood mark.
