The long journey
A crowd in Indiana gathers in August 1930 to watch the lynching of two black criminals Tom Shipp and Abe Smith by vigilantes. Racist sentiment in America was rife, especially in the Deep South where the majority of former slaves and their families had settled.
145 years separate these two photos – a slave beaten near to death, and a young senator elected 44th President of the United States. This is the story of the African Americans' journey from degradation to dignity
