The true story of Nat Turner (1800-31, the black man who led the fiercest slave rebellion ever) is a potent and conveniently marginalised part of American history - and a hell of a tale in its own right. In Kyle Baker's adept hands, it makes for a magnificent and haunting graphic novel as well. Using Turner's own confessions to drive the narrative, Baker is able to focus on creating artwork that complements the erudite and tragic commentary. In this, Baker is brilliant: duotone images rendered in charcoal and paint lay bare the horrors of an evil practice. Every panel exudes emotion and drama - not least in the intricately expressive faces yearning for freedom.
