Silly skulls

Matt Franks is a nearly-middle-aged UK sculptor who has shown at Tate Britain and is head of sculpture at Camberwell College of Art. All very respectable. Except that, as his lesser-known drawings show, inside him is a big kid bursting to get out. And burst out it does. Explosively farty, noisy, luridly coloured and stoopidly anarchic, his drawings brim over with insane, cartoon-like energy. Like all good schoolboys, Franks is into skulls, which he merges with highly silly, sometimes naughty, biomorphic forms. His sculptures are more sensible - more formally constrained - but all his work is fun, and well worth taking a look at.
