Don’t have nightmares
From our childhood paranoia that the bogeyman is hiding under the bed to our adult dread of death, Joshua Hoffine plumbs the depths of human fears and manifests them with theatrical gusto. Quite literally, his images are the stuff of nightmares. Fairytales, legends and clowns lend themselves perfectly to his project, laced as they are with latent menace. And with his use of elaborate costumes, sets, props and special-effects make-up, the whole thing is done in the spirit of a good old-fashioned movie. It's deliberately cliched, fantastically over the top, Disney-style stuff, giving a wonderfully hammy – yet still undeniably creepy – quality to the horrors within.
