Christian Bale as Jim Graham in Steven Spielberg's 1987 film 'Empire of the Sun' based on Ballard's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. Ballard was born and raised in China. For two years during the second Sino-Japanese War, Ballard and his family were forced to live in a civilian internment camp – an experience on which 'Empire of the Sun is based.
