Venus moves across the face of the Sun in an image captured by Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory today. The transit of Venus is a rare astronomical event which occurs in pairs twice each century when the second planet passes between the Sun and the Earth. The planet's last transit of this kind was seen in 2004 and will not take place again until 2117.
