Lonesome George, the last remaining Pinta Island giant tortoise in the world, has died at the Galapagos National Park on the island of Santa Cruz. His death means that the subspecies of which he was a member has become extinct. He was thought to be around 100 years old and died at a relatively young age for a giant tortoise. A post mortem will be held to try and find out why he died.
