The Tube at 150: London Underground in pictures
The Tube network expanded rapidly in the late 19th century and reached places like Hounslow, Wimbledon and Chesham on the outskirts on London, helping to create new suburbs. Growth continued in the 20th century and technological advances made it possible to tunnel deeper than before. In 1930s the Piccadilly Line, which originally ran from Finsbury Park to Hammersmith, was extended north as far as Cockfosters (above).
