Croatian referee gives yellow card for dying

Yellow card

Defender Goran Tunjic was accused of diving when he fell to the ground dead

The notorious Premier League referee Graham Poll, who once famously gave out three yellow cards to a player in the course of a single game, has finally been out-blundered by a fifth division Croatian ref.

It happened when  the unnamed referee gave a yellow card for diving to defender Goran Tunjic, only to realise that Tunjic had actually collapsed and died of a heart attack.

Tunjic, a 32-year-old defender for Croatian side Mladostm, toppled to the ground after being tackled in the 35th minute of a match against local rivals Hrvatski Sokola. The ref had specifically gone to each team before the game, warning that he would show short shrift to anyone play-acting.

Seeing Tunjic go to ground, despite there being no contact in the tackle, he strode over and promptly waved a yellow card over the prone player, to the initial delight of the Sokola supporters.

However, he quickly realised his mistake and called for stretchers. Tunjic was then taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. "Doctors tried to help him but there was nothing they could do," a club spokesman said of the player, who had no previous medical problems. "He just fell dead on the spot."

The fifth division match was then abandoned, leaving the score at 0-0. ·
