Ukrainian MPs hurl eggs and smoke bombs

Fighting breaks out as Parliament passes controversial treaty

The Ukrainian Parliament descended into chaos yesterday after opposition MPs launched a three-pronged attack using eggs, tomatoes and smoke bombs.

Parliament was in session in Kiev to ratify a controversial treaty to extend a lease for the Russian navy.

Bizarre scenes unfolded as opposition politicians threw eggs, fired smoke bombs and unhurled a huge Ukrainian flag in an attempt to halt proceedings. The pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovich and the Speaker Volodymr Lytvyn sheltered under umbrellas, hoping to avoid being splattered with yolk and tomatoes.

But despite causing an uproar the opposition MPs' attempt ultimately failed. Parliament voted to ratify the treaty that will allow Russia's Black Sea fleet to be based in Sevastopol  on Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula until 2042.

In return, Ukraine will pay 30 per cent less for natural gas imported from Russia. ·
