East of Eton: the movie David Cameron won't want to see
#CameronMovieNames becomes top Twitter trend after prime minister queries Meryl Streep film
DAVID CAMERON went on the BBC Radio Today programme this morning to talk about his new policy to free nurses from red tape and ended up setting the top trending subject on Twitter in the UK. The subject was not the NHS - but what a movie about his political career might be called.
Within an hour of his appearance, the Twittersphere was humming with joke titles, many of them created by that ardent tweeter and former Labour deputy PM John Prescott, whose username is @JohnPrescott. Dial M for Murdoch, Peter Luff Actually - a reference to the Tory MP for mid-Worcestershire who made a name for himself during the Commons expenses saga - and You’ve Got Daily Mail are just three of Prescott’s efforts.
It all started when Today’s Evan Davis asked the prime minister what he thought of The Iron Lady, a sneak preview of which Cameron had enjoyed before today’s cinema opening. Like the critics, he raved about the acting - Meryl Streep’s turn as Maggie Thatcher has been described variously as ‘astonishing’ and ‘Oscar-winning’ - but he felt strongly that the movie, which concentrates on Lady Thatcher’s dementia, should not have been made in her lifetime.
This led, inevitably, to Davis asking whether Cameron would wish a film to be made about his life. In replying modestly “I’m sure the movie will never be made”, Cameron opened the floodgates.
Here are some of the best so far. To keep abreast of latest suggestions, or add your own, the Twitter hashtag is #CameronMovieNames...
