David Cameron's seat at the EU table is all a myth
The important talks are between the 17 eurozone states – when Dave will be shown the door
DAVID CAMERON's claims to have secured Britain a seat at the table for the negotiations on the euro bailout will be shown to be a myth today.
Camo will make much of the fact at Prime Minister's Questions at midday that he has made sure the 27 have a say at their meeting at 5 pm in Brussels tonight, but that is little more than a talking shop.
The real meeting comes later and that is when Dave will be shown the door because it is restricted to the 17 eurozone countries.
It is likely the talks will drag on with Sarko and Merkel ganging up on Silvio – even if he is about to stand down, as latest rumours from Rome suggest - while Sarko makes jokes about Merkel getting fat by having two helpings of cheese as he did last weekend.
The euro ministers have postponed their own meeting which should have been first thing today. If there is no agreement, the IMF may have to step in. And that could mean drawing on the British taxpayer because although we are not in the eurozone we have to support the IMF.
Meanwhile Cameron has to climb aboard a plane tomorrow for the Commonwealth heads of government meeting in Australia hosted by HM the Queen. He may be better sending HMQ an email saying "Sorry, I can't make it." Otherwise, his claims to have a handle on the euro negotiations will look like so much tosh. ·
