David Cameron hints at freeze on petrol duty – a good move
Clear suggestion that George Osborne will back motorists in upcoming Autumn Statement
DAVID CAMERON dropped the biggest possible hint at Prime Minister’s Questions today - the last before next week's Autumn Statement - that Chancellor George Osborne will freeze the 3p increase in fuel duty due to take effect next January.
Answering Tory John Whittingdale, Cameron said the Government was “right to help motorists' expenses”.
This was such an obvious nudge to Osborne that it was even spotted by the Beeb's deputy political editor, Old Etonian James Landale, on The Daily Politics.
It would be a clever move because it would be popular, boost the economy - and show the doubters that democracy works.
An online petition containing 110,000 signatures forced the Commons to debate scrapping the planned 3p fuel duty increase and over 100 MPs have signed a motion calling on the Government to indeed scrap it.
Cynics said it was a pointless exercise because Cameron and Osborne aren't listening. This will show they are.
Having raised hopes, the PM will get clobbered if Osborne doesn’t follow through. ·
