England Six Nations rugby squad will usher in a new era
Coach Stuart Lancaster is set to bring in plenty of new faces as England start from scratch
AFTER the debacle of England's World Cup campaign, the rugby writers are licking their lips at the prospect of caretaker coach Stuart Lancaster announcing a new-look squad for the Six Nations.
He unveils his 32-man squad at lunchtime today and there are sure to be some unfamiliar names.
There could be as many as eight uncapped players in what Mick Cleary in The Daily Telegraph says "is shaping up to be the most inexperienced England side in 50 years." Cleary adds: "If not quite Year Zero, it is certainly a formative time for this generation. History is to be made anew."
There will be plenty of casualties from the Martin Johnson era, says Robert Kitson in The Guardian. "Trading places with Lewis Moody, Mike Tindall, Mark Cueto et al will be names such as Owen Farrell (above), Ben Morgan, Brad Barritt and Joe Marler, all uncapped and desperate to be part of a brighter future. It will not so much feel like a small transfusion of fresh blood as a whole armful."
Other names in the frame according to Kitson are flanker Andy Saull and back Billy Twelvetrees.
Chris Hewett in The Independent also calls for the inclusion of Twelvetrees and Gloucester number eight, Luke Narraway. "There is room for a dozen players who took no part in the comedy of the 2011 World Cup," he adds.
Mark Souster of The Times believes flanker Calum Clark will also get the call, and that Lancaster's youthful selection will usher in a new era for England.
Souster praises Lancaster. "In only two months, he deserves credit for lessening England's toxic image," he writes. But he warns that while England can begin planning for the 2015 World Cup, which will be played on home soil, Lancaster does not have time on his side. "If he wants to make a case for the job permanently, he needs results now," he notes. ·
