Teaching lipreading, coping and communication strategies to the deaf and hard of hearing

LAST UPDATED AT 14:36 ON Tue 17 Jan 2012

The disadvantages of the deaf, deafened and hard of hearing are depression, isolation and a sensitive self-consciousness leading to unsociability and a lack of confidence. People withdraw from the world when communication becomes too difficult. Seeing Voices runs sessions that teach the theory of lipreading, and coping and communication strategies so that people can carry out the day-to-day activities most people take for granted. Also, being with other people who are suffering the effects of the same disability helps the deafened and hard of hearing to feel they are not alone. Attending these sessions is life-enhancing in the truest sense. These sessions are offered free to the participants because it is not right that they should pay to learn these skills - they did not ask to lose their hearing.
