Caring for working animals in the poorest countries of the world

LAST UPDATED AT 08:56 ON Mon 23 Jan 2012

SPANA is the charity for the working animals of the world. Since 1923 we’ve worked in some of the world’s poorest countries, caring for horses, donkeys and other animals that endure hardship and backbreaking toil. Our vision is of a future where all working animals are treated with respect, care and compassion. But SPANA is no ordinary animal charity. We believe that by ensuring a working animal is healthy and well cared for, we also help poor families.

People living in poverty often depend on working animals. They can’t afford tractors, trucks and cars. Instead they rely on animals like donkeys, horses, mules and camels to plough fields, transport crops and carry people. That’s a fact we can’t change, but we can work towards a future where all working animals are treated with respect, care and compassion. For more information, visit spana.org. ·
