Vettel victory takes F1 title race to a decider
Red Bull win the constructors championship, but four drivers are still chasing the title
This year's Formula 1 championship will go down to the final race of the season, with three drivers all in with a realistic chance of winning the title, after Red Bull secured a vital one-two in Brazil.
Sebastian Vettel led his team mate Mark Webber home at Interlagos to take the race for this year's crown down to the wire. But Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso came in third to retain the lead in the championship.
Behind the top three were the McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, who's fifth place finish means that he cannot now retain the title he won last year. But Hamilton is still mathematically in with a chance.
Alonso now leads the championship by eight points from Webber, and will win the title if he finishes second in the final race of the season, even if Webber wins it.
Vettel is a further seven points back, 15 behind Alonso. If the German were to win in Abu Dhabi then Alonso would still take the title if he finished in the top four.
A three way tie is possible between the drivers. If Vettel and webber secure another one-two next weekend they will both have 256 points, and Alonso will have the same if he finishes fifth.
Hamilton can still win the title if he wins the final race of the season, Alonso fails to score a point and Vettel finishes outside the top three and Webber outside the top five.
But one thing has been settled. Red Bull's dominance in Sao Paolo earned them the constructors championship.
Both Vettel and Webber overtook the surprise pole-sitter, Nico Hulkenberg of Williams, in the early stages and never looked back in what was a relatively uneventful race.
The result leaves the issue of team orders at Red Bull in the spotlight. Although Webber is best placed to win the title for the Milton Keynes-based outfit, he has accused the team of favouring Vettel over him all season.
But the young German was more focused on the threat of Alonso after the race. "I don't wish anything bad to happen to [Alonso] but it would be nice if we see some nice Ferrari smoke," said Vettel. "No, joking apart, we try to win the race and we see where he is." ·
