Button refuses to accept defeat in F1 title race
Reigning F1 champion says he is still racing to win, not to support team mate Lewis Hamilton
Jenson Button has once again refused to accept defeat in his quest to retain the Formula 1 championship and says he has no intention of being Lewis Hamilton's support driver for the last two races of the season.
Although he is 42 points off the leader Fernando Alonso and 21 behind Hamilton, with only 50 points left to fight for, Button refuses to give up and thinks there is still a chance of him winning the title.
"I've always said I will fight until it's mathematically impossible. Sure, looking at it written down on paper, you've got to admit it's a long shot," Button said.
"But I'd regret it for the rest of my life if I chose not to go for it, and then circumstances transpired to give me a full run at the title. So for me the situation's the same – I'll be fighting until it's no longer possible for me.
The next race is at Interlagos in Brazil and the current World Champion is praying for rain.
"In Formula 1 you just never know. It's totally possible I could win at Interlagos, take home maximum points and have none of the other title contenders finish.
"If it's another wet race, that could easily happen. Basically, you learn early on in this sport it's not over until it's over."
Button's personal ambition is in stark contrast to the attitude shown at pit-lane rivals Ferrari. They escaped serious punishment in September after being found to have given team orders to Felipe Massa forcing him to let Fernando Alonso overtake. ·
