Sex and erotic fantasies: one way to build a football team

Hannover coach conducts very personal survey in a bid to better understand player motivation

PLAYERS at German Bundesliga club Hannover are being asked to reveal their sexual preferences as part of a survey aimed at giving their coach a deeper understanding of their motivations.

The sexual element of the 128-question survey requires players to respond to such statements as "I have a strong and frequent desire for sex", "I have many erotic fantasies" and "I am proud of my erotic experiences". Players rate how strongly they agree on a scale of -3 to +3.

Coach Mirko Slomka says that he has taken the survey himself - which is being handed out on a voluntary basis - and will allow the squad to see his answers if they wish.

The test is based on the theories of Steven Reiss, a US psychologist whose work is founded on the belief that there are 16 basic human desires, and that understanding the importance an individual places on each of these desires allows employers to better motivate them.

The 16 desires identified by Reiss include Acceptance (the need for approval), Idealism (the need for social justice) and Vengeance (the need to strike back/ to win).

Professor Reiss established his approach after conducting research using 6000 volunteers and it has since been used to help a range of sports people, including the German Handball team.

Big businesses also make use of Reiss profiling - the German clothes company Kressner and Austrian food manufacturer Kraft have both had employees undergo the 20 minute test to gain better understanding of staff motivation.

Hannover's completed surveys will be examined by the club's “motivation consultant” Peter Boltersdorf who said “ Each player needs different conditions to perform at his best over a long period. This is what I have to look at. Each player should have the feeling his individuality is being looked into.

Coach Slomka has high hopes for the novel approach, telling Bild: "With this test I know how I can best reach each player." ·
