Wimbledon draw: Roddick and Nadal loom for Murray
Andy Murray gets an easy opener - but he’ll have to overcome two old enemies to reach the final
Andy Murray will open his Wimbledon campaign with a first-round match against 25-year-old Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who is ranked 56th in the world. Having beaten the Spaniard twice in their previous meetings, the tie shouldn't cause Murray many problems.
Yet if the Scot wants to reach the Wimbledon final, it is likely he will have to defeat the last two players to eliminate him from the competition: Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick.
That's the news from the Wimbledon draw announced this morning ahead of Monday's tournament start.
Murray may be confident of victory against A-Rod, a three-time Wimbledon finalist, having destroyed the American 6-3 6-1 in 59 minutes at Queen's last week. The prospect of facing Nadal, the world number one who beat Murray in straight sets earlier this month, will be less appealing. The two will meet in the semi-final if both players advance that far.
Elsewhere, the pick of the first-round ties is John Isner's rematch with Nicolas Mahut. The two players made history at Wimbledon last year, needing a record-breaking 186 games to settle their match. After over 11 hours of play, Isner won the match with a 70-68 final set.
Murray expressed more interest in this remarkable rematch than his own fate when he heard the draw. "Isner vs mahut drawing each other in the first round after last year is the most amazing thing I've seen in tennis!" he wrote on Twitter. "Centre court anyone?!"
Other British hopefuls face tough opponents in the first round. James Ward, the British male number two who enjoyed a remarkable run to the semi-finals at Queen's Club this month, will play world number 25 Michael Llodra.
In the women's draw, the UK is at least guaranteed some representation in the second round after Anne Keothavong and Naomi Broady were drawn against each other in an all-British Wimbledon opener. ·
