Rory McIlroy 'dumps' Caroline Wozniacki after torrid year
The Northern Irish golfer has faced criticism over high-profile relationship, and now it seems to be over
STRUGGLING golfer Rory McIlroy is said to have ditched his girlfriend, the tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, after a two-year romance as he bids to get his game back on track after a difficult season.
The claims come after several former players expressed reservations over McIlroy's relationship with Wozniacki, the world number eight female tennis player, and his globetrotting lifestyle.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the golfer's decision to dump the 23-year-old Dane has left her "absolutely devastated", particularly as the couple had only recently patched up their differences after an earlier falling out.
The paper reports: "Sources close to the 24-year-old golfing prodigy said there was no way back for the pair this time, however, saying he had made his mind up that his game had to come first."
The Irish Independent, which carried the story over the weekend, reports that the split was prompted by Wozniacki posting a photo of McIlroy on Twitter that showed him fast asleep. "Rory was very upset by it and even Serena Williams pointed out - albeit in a joking way - it was a pretty mean thing to do," a friend of the golfer told the paper.
The Independent claims that the relationship ended days after the picture was posted. "Rory has a lot of respect for Caroline and their time together was good, but he feels it's time to move on now. And he wishes her nothing but the best," said a source.
The split comes three months after McIlroy was warned by South African golfer Gary Player that he needed to find "the right wife".
Previously Johnny Miller, the former US Open winner and NBC commentator, suggested that McIlroy’s relationship with Wozniacki was "distracting" him from the business of golf.
After a stellar 2012 in which he won his second major and topped the money list, McIlroy's form has slumped. He is yet to win a tournament in 2013. ·
