President calls 37-year-old an ‘up-and-comer' and says half the LA Galaxy team ‘could be his kids'

PRESIDENT OBAMA has punctured some big egos with speeches in the past: Donald Trump, Matt Damon, Arnold Schwarzenegger... But now he's turned his fire to a target more close to home for Brits: David Beckham.

The President was hosting Beckham's team, LA Galaxy, at the White House to celebrate their triumph in this season's Major League Soccer title race. Paying tribute to the 37-year-old ex-England captain, Obama said:

"We also have a young up-and-comer on the team, a guy named David Beckham. I have to say I gave David a hard time – I said half his team mates could be his kids."

As Beckham's team mates cracked up, the President continued, listing the injuries the Brit had sustained throughout the season. "He is tough," Obama said. "In fact, it's a rare man who can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear".
