Police interview John Terry over Ferdinand race row

England captain interviewed under caution over claims that he abused QPR defender

ENGLAND captain John Terry has finally been interviewed by police over allegations that he racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand at a game last month.

He was spoken to by police in Surrey last Friday, 24 hours before Chelsea took on Wolves, while under caution.

The Guardian reports: "It remains to be seen whether charges are brought against the 30-year-old England captain, who is also the subject of inquiries by the Football Association into the flashpoint."

Videos of Terry shouting at Ferdinand emerged after the match at Loftus Road in October, and the Chelsea defender admitted using offensive words, but has claimed they were taken out of context. He says he was responding to an allegation that he had been racist towards Ferdinand and in dismissing the claim had repeated the offending phrase.

When the FA announced it was looking into the matter Terry said he was pleased because it gave him the chance to clear his name. However, the police then got involved when a member of the public contacted them by email to lodge a complaint.

The row has now rumbled on for over a month and has cast a shadow over Terry and his role as England captain.

The Times reports that Tokyo Sexwale, an South African anti-apartheid activist and government minister, has criticised the Football Association for keeping Terry as the England captain while he is under investigation for the alleged abuse. ·
