The Northamptonshire racetrack was built as a military airbase in 1943 and was converted for car racing at the end of World War Two. The course's inaugural race, the RAC Grand Prix in 1948, was won by Luigi Villoresi in a Maserati, who recorded an average speed of 72mph round the 3.67 mile course to claim the first prize of £500.
