A German historian who witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall explains why it did not feel like a momentous event at the time
The geopolitical implications may have been massive, but not everyone grasped the importance of the fall of the Berlin Wall on the night of November 9, 1989. Roland Pietsch, an 18-year-old in his final year of school, was one of those who nonchalantly accepted the end of an era. However, he was at least equipped with a camera when his headmaster closed the school the following day and took his students to the Brandenburg Gate.
