Controversy was always a key ingredient in Helmut Newton's success. In the 1970s, his fondness for photographing sexy, gender-bending women (often involving eroticised or compromising nudity) not only became his trademark but also led to accusations of misogyny for supposedly degrading his subjects.

When Helmut Newton was unceremoniously (and temporarily) sacked from French Vogue after a spat with the editor in 1964, it didn't knock him askew as you might expect. Instead, it fostered fruitful working relationships with various other glossies such as Elle, Nova and Marie Claire. And it's these fashion shoots from the Sixties and Seventies that are brought together here, in a showcase of classic Newton images.
