On the most superficial level, Alex Prager's pictures are wonderfully retro and stylish. But behind the coiffed hairdos, false eyelashes and synthetic outfits, this LA-based photographer has a serious agenda. In her series Polyester, a string of dollybirds and Hitchcockian babes (such as Jackie, 2007, above) are on parade, trying to appear glamorous but instead looking rather uncomfortable.
