The iPhone is - by a distance - the most spectacular smartphone on the market. Compared to the iPhone 3G, the 3GS is significantly faster, has voice control, video recording with touchscreen video editor and the camera now has a 3-megapixel sensor and auto-focus. As is fair to expect from the iPhone's OS, using it all is smooth. And, with 50,000 apps on offer and the promise of top-end 3D graphics in the coming months, the attraction of the App Store keeps growing. The iPhone is extremely expensive, but it does a huge amount and, crucially, it's fun to use in the process. ·

The big question though is whether the iPhone is desirable enough to be forced to change my mobile phone provider. Beyond just the principle of being dictated to like this - I have been with my provider (Orange) for many years, they look after me well and always review my tariffs fairly (mostly downwards!). Changing to O2, a provider that has less than glowing reports about its customer service and coverage just to get the latest gizmo would be ridiculous - it is just a phone after all!
