Nokia N97: iPhone wannabe
Nokia's smartphone isn't quite the iPhone killer they hoped it would be
When Nokia first announced the N97 back in December, the suggestion was that it would be a genuine 'iPhone killer', so expectations were high. The 3.5-inch, 230k-pixel touchscreen is the star of the show, and it certainly justifies the handset's general bulkiness. It does a good all-round job with media, even if the camera's basic spec is a little weaker than some rivals. As a more mundane business communication device, the slide-out QWERTY keyboard and simple access to communication tools are an obvious plus, but its speed generally isn't. The problem really is that Nokia has taken too long about it. Every single one of its rivals has upped its game since December so as a result, while the N97 certainly deserves a place in the elite smartphone brigade, it doesn't quite head it up. ·
