Game of Thrones: what does new trailer reveal? – video
Fans given glimpse of new characters in first trailer for season four, due to premiere in the UK in April
THE first trailer for Game of Thrones season four has been released by HBO, offering fans an insight into the storylines ahead.
The Emmy-winning programme, based on the popular book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, chronicles an epic power struggle in a violent fantasy kingdom. The latest season is based on A Storm of Swords, the third of seven planned novels in the series.
The new trailer, first shown on Sunday, is packed with ominous scenes featuring crows pecking at corpses and plenty of brooding shots of characters staring at one another.
Fans are given a first glimpse of several new characters, including one of the most popular from the books, Prince Oberyn Martell, known as the Red Viper of Dorne, played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal.
The trailer promises "fresh hell in Westeros" as Daenerys Targaryen's plans for world domination gather pace, says The Independent.
Meanwhile, King Joffrey, played by Jack Gleeson, is expected to marry Margaery Tyrell, played by Natalie Dormer, but it appears that trouble lies ahead for the cowardly king. In one scene, he tells his father/uncle Jaime Lannister: "They know I saved the city, they know I won the war," only for him to retort: "The war's not won."
The action-packed teaser includes several more bleak one-liners. "There is only one hell, the one we live in now," laments priestess Melisandre, while Tyrion Lannister has the final word in the trailer: "If you want justice, you've come to the wrong place."
The fourth season will premiere in the UK on 7 April on Sky Atlantic.
