Doctor Who trailer: dinosaurs, Daleks and the end of Amy Pond
As the Time Lord takes on Weeping Angels, will Amy and Rory meet a fate 'worse than death'?
FANS of Doctor Who were given a first glimpse of what is in store for the Time Lord this autumn in a trailer that aired on BBC1 last night.
The 90-second clip includes a scene where the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, is surrounded by thousands of Daleks. There are also Wild West sets and shots of the ancient alien race Weeping Angels.
Fans can also see the Doctor preparing to battle prehistoric creatures as he exclaims: "Dinosaurs... on a spaceship!"
While a number of viewers were unimpressed - some said it looked like "a series of rehashed ideas" – the overriding reaction was one of excitement.
"Never a dull moment with the doctor," commented one fan, with another insisting the makers had "really outdone themselves this time". Digital Spy said the trailer made each instalment look like "an action-packed blockbuster".
Some fans could barely contain themselves: "Oh. My. GOD! This looks awesome! Now I'm going to be running around on a Doctor-Who's-almost-here buzz for a month. My goodness, this is like Christmas!"
But Dan Martin at The Guardian said he was approaching the new series with "slight dread, as well as trepidation, and complete thrill".
A scene showing the Doctor carrying Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan, in his arms has sparked rumours that Amy will be killed at the end of the five-episode series, to be aired this autumn. It is known that Gillan will be replaced by Jenna-Louise Coleman.
Dan Martin says "we should be genuinely worried” about the circumstances that lead Amy and her husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) to leave, adding: "I have a horrible feeling it's going to be something even worse than death".
At least fans will be consoled to hear that Matt Smith has no plans to go anywhere. He told TV magazine: "I'd like to stay in the show forever. For another 50 years. I love making it."
