Noel Gallagher: if Stone Roses can reform, so can Oasis
As long as Oasis's members stay slim and don't go bald, a reunion is on the cards says Noel Gallagher
NOEL GALLAGHER has given Oasis fans a glimmer of hope, saying the famously fractious band could reform because "if the Stone Roses can do it, then anyone can do it".
Speaking to the Evening Standard, the elder Gallagher brother appeared to have softened his position on a reformation following this year's reunion gigs by the Stone Roses, the 'Madchester' band that inspired the Gallagher brothers to form Oasis.
Only two months ago, Noel, 45, said an Oasis reunion would not happen "even if all the starving children in the world depended on it".
Now he said: "I can understand the man in the street thinking, ‘That was such a huge thing, how can you walk away from it? I understand. When the Sex Pistols reformed I thought it was the greatest thing of all time."
He then said an Oasis reunion would always be on the cards as long as its members stayed "reasonably thin" and didn't go bald - an odd comment, given that the band's original rhythm guitarist Paul Arthurs is better known as ‘Bonehead' because of his hairless pate.
An Oasis reunion is far from guaranteed, however. Gallagher said he had been in recent contact with former members including his brother, Liam, guitarist Gem Archer and drummer Chris Sharrock, but "not one of them mentioned it [a reunion]."
Noel is more preoccupied with his role as curator of this year's Teenage Cancer Trust gig, a position he inherited from The Who's Roger Daltrey. He's persuaded musical mates including Blur's Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon, Kasabian, Primal Scream and comedians Russell Brand and Noel Fielding to perform at the show at the Royal Albert Hall in March.
"It's not something I ever envisaged myself doing," he told the Standard. "But if I can help, I will help. I don't know why it is, I never used to get asked to do f*** all in Oasis. Now, f***ing hell! If I did everything I was asked to I would have an MBE. No question." ·
