5ft-long shark gives Essex a 'Jaws' moment - video
Ramblers on banks of River Stour astonished to see shark swimming ten miles from sea
ESSEX, a county not usually associated with sharks - at least not the marine variety - has had its very own Jaws moment.
The five-foot animal was filmed swimming in the River Stour on Sunday. Experts told the Daily Telegraph the shark could be a Starry Smooth-hound, a species more commonly found in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
Jody Gibbons, the 27-year-old marketing executive who filmed the shark on his phone, said he was astonished to see it in Essex, ten miles from the sea.
"We walked past and saw a big fin sticking up out of the water and thought 'that must be a big fish'," Gibbons said. "That thought quickly became 'that's a massive fish' and then I realised it was a shark. I really could not believe what I was seeing." ·
