POLICE have arrested a woman after a video clip of a passenger on a London tram racially abusing her fellow passengers went viral and was viewed more than 2 million times in a day.

The two-and-a-half minute long film shows a white woman sitting with a child on her knee embarking on a foul-mouthed diatribe, claiming that Britain had been ruined by immigration and telling black people to "go back to their own country".

According to The Guardian, the incident was filmed on the Croydon to Wimbledon tramlink, but the date of the heated confrontation between the woman and the other passengers is not known.

It was posted on YouTube on Sunday and quickly attracted thousands of viewers, many of who left comments expressing shock and anger at the white woman's behaviour.

Social networking sites like Twitter were also inundated and the hashtag #MyTramExperience became a trending topic across the country.

British Transport police had asked the media to publicise the video to try and track down the woman, who was covertly filmed by one of her fellow passengers.

British Transport police said a 34-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. Earlier they force said: "We will not tolerate racism in any form on the rail network and will do everything in our power to locate the person responsible."
