Daniel Day-Lewis makes Oscars history – becoming the first man ever to win best actor for a third time

LAST UPDATED AT 08:59 ON Mon 25 Feb 2013

IT WAS an Oscar night on which the only big surprises were First Lady Michelle Obama co-presenting the best film award from the White House and Barbra Streisand appearing at the Academy Awards for the first time since 1973 to sing The Way We Were in a tribute to the late Marvin Hamlisch.

These were the big winners (full list below):

Best picture: Ben Affleck's Tehran hostage drama Argo won the top award. The last film to win best picture without its director being nominated for best director was 1990's Driving Miss Daisy. For The Guardian, Argo's win marked a "glorious success" for Affleck who starred, directed and produced alongside George Clooney and Grant Heslov.

Best director: Ang Lee won for his 3D adaption of Yann Martel's bestselling novel Life of Pi. The other main contender had been Steven Spielberg for Lincoln. As the Daily Telegraph notes, the film was the most successful on a night when no film swept the board: it picked up three other awards - best adapted screenplay, best cinematography and best original score.

Best actor: Daniel Day-Lewis made Academy Awards history when he won best actor for the third time in his career. Fellow nominees Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix and Denzel Washington never stood a chance up against his portrayal of President Lincoln. The actor famous for immersing himself in his roles won for My Left Foot in 1990 and There Will Be Blood in 2008.

Best actress: Jennifer Lawrence won for her performance as a troubled young widow in Silver Linings Playbook. The 22-year-old actress, who tripped up on her way to collect the award on stage, wished a happy 86th birthday to fellow nominee and Armour actress Emmanuelle Riva in her acceptance speech.

Best supporting actor: Christoph Waltz took the award for his role in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained over Hollywood heavyweights Robert De Niro, Alan Arkin, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tommy Lee Jones.

Best supporting actress: Anne Hathaway won her first Oscar for her role in Les Miserables over fellow nominees Amy Adams, Sally Field, Helen Hunt and Jacki Weaver. As the Telegraph noted, she was a "dead-cert victor" for her role as Fantine. Les Mis might also have won best song – but it went to Adele for the Bond film Skyfall.
