The Scottish independence referendum is underway but it is once the polling closes at 10pm that the drama of results night will begin.

Running totals are expected to start coming in between 1am and 6am tomorrow morning, with television channels offering rolling coverage.

Several pubs in Scotland have been granted late licences so punters can watch the referendum results unfold.

The Edinburgh Evening News lists seven bars, including Kilderkin close to the Scottish Parliament on Canongate, which will stay open until 3am.

Another bar, the Radical Road on Willowbrae Road, has secured a 5am licence, says the newspaper.

Some pubs are taking special measures to ensure punters remain cheerful, such as serving beer with low-alcohol content or only allowing in either Yes or No supporters to reduce the potential of trouble sparking between rival voters.

In Glasgow, "Charlie the Referendum Rooster" will be predicting the outcome of the vote at Sloans Bar & Restaurant at 5pm, while Yes Bar (Vespbar) is holding a Scotland Decides Party. Scottish turntable spinner DJ Tam Coyle will perform alongside live TV coverage of the ballot-counting, reports STV.

Yes supporters are also expected to gather in Glasgow's George Square at sunrise tomorrow for what will be "a victory celebration or a wake", says The Independent.

South of the border, Boisdale in Canary Wharf is televising the referendum coverage while serving up haggis, Hebridean lobster and Aberdeenshire fillet steak. However, tickets to the event appear to have sold out fast. Hackney's cinema Hollywood Spring is marking the occasion with a showing of Highlander tonight, while musicians Fiddle Paradiddle are holding a "totally non-political, celebration of Scotland whatever-your-nationalist-feelings ceilidh" at Fusilier House in Balham on Friday night.

Alternatively, avoid the rabble and watch the results from the comfort of your own living room. In Scotland, STV is running all-night coverage from 10.40pm to 6am, with leading politicians, commentators and analysts.

Viewers outside Scotland can watch via STV Player or tune into BBC1 or ITV for continuous coverage and analysis from 10.40pm to 6am. Sky News continues its coverage overnight with Adam Boulton in Ingliston, Kay Burley in Glasgow and Niall Paterson in Aberdeen. For those who want a good night's sleep, the final result is expected to be announced between 6.30am and 7.30am.
