Beyonce answers critics with live anthem rendition - video

Singer admits she mimed at Obama inauguration, but sings US anthem live at Super Bowl press conference

BEYONCE admitted yesterday that she lip-synched The Star Spangled Banner at President Obama's inauguration, but proved emphatically she can sing the US anthem by performing it live and unaccompanied before a roomful of journalists in New Orleans for Sunday's Super Bowl.

The singer, who was widely criticised for miming to a pre-recorded rendition of the US National Anthem on 21 January, surprised sports journalists by asking them to stand at a press conference in the bowels of the New Orleans Convention Centre before launching into her cappella rendition.

After hitting the last note she laughed and asked "Any questions?"

Beyonce is the star attraction at Sunday's pivotal match between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens and insists her half-time performance will be completely live. She refused to say which songs she will be singing at the Superdome or whether she will be joined on stage by members of her former group, Destiny's Child.

Beyonce told journalists she had not sung live in Washington because she did not have enough time to rehearse with the US marine band that backed her, and she is a "perfectionist" who practices "until my feet bleed".

She added: "It was a live television show and a very, very important emotional show for me."

The singer said the cold weather in the capital and the lack of a "proper sound check" also contributed to her decision to use a pre-recorded track. But she said her performance before hundreds of thousands of Americans gathered on the Mall in Washington remained "one of my proudest moments".
