Dick Van Dyke escapes unhurt from flaming Jaguar after car catches fire on LA freeway
THE American actor Dick Van Dyke had a narrow escape yesterday when his Jaguar burst into flames on a Los Angeles freeway. He was pulled from the car by a passer-by, Jason Pennington, seconds before it burst into flames.
The 87-year-old actor, once one of the biggest names in American television, had pulled over thinking he had a flat tyre. He was on his car phone when Pennington spotted him at the side of the road, the car filling with smoke.
The veteran actor is best known for The Dick Van Dyke Show, the comedy about the misadventures of a TV comedy writer that ran on CBS from 1961 to 1966. It spawned the Mary Tyler Moore Show and gave work to many American comic actors, including Rob Reiner's father, Carl Reiner.
Van Dyke also enjoyed a movie career, starring opposite Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins (1964) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).
The actor told TMZ.com how he watched his Jaguar "burn to a crisp". He added: "Tell 'em I have a nice used car for sale." ·
