Man arrested over Miss Teen USA nude photos 'sextortion'
Student allegedly hijacked girls' webcams to take nude photos and then blackmail them for more
A STUDENT has been arrested for allegedly blackmailing Miss Teen USA using nude photographs he took by hacking into her computer and hijacking her webcamera.
Jared Abrahams, 19, appeared in court in Santa Ana, California yesterday following an FBI investigation into several cases of "sextortion".
Abrahams, a computer science student, from Temecula, California, is accused of targeting women from his home state, as well as Canada, Moldova and Russia, hijacking their webcameras and capturing images of them as they undressed.
He then allegedly threatened to publish the photos unless the women sent him further explicit material.
"Either you do one of the things listed or I upload these pics ... on all your accounts for everybody to see, and your dream of being a model will be transformed into a pornstar," he is said to have written to one victim.
His most high-profile victim was Cassidy Wolf, who went on to win the Miss Teen USA pageant in August, says The Times.
She alerted authorities earlier this year after receiving anonymous emails containing nude photos of her. She was told the pictures would be posted all over the internet unless she sent "good quality pics", a video of herself or followed his instructions in a video chat on Skype.
Cassidy told NBC last month: "I was terrified. I started screaming, bawling my eyes out."
Wolf advised other people in her position not to stay silent. "The longer it goes on, the worse it will get, so if you can get the word out, talk to the authorities, it will already help you," she said.
Abrahams was yesterday freed on bail of $50,000 and will return to court on 4 November. He was ordered to wear an electronic tag and stay in his home, where he can use his parent's computer for schoolwork, but the machine will be monitored. ·
