PRESIDENT Barack Obama prevaricated and was indecisive when required to order the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in which the al-Qaeda leader was killed, according to a new book by the investigative journalist Richard Miniter. The allegation runs against the image of the decisive president who finally “got” Osama.
Leading From Behind: The Reluctant President and the Advisers Who Decide for Him alleges that Obama called off the raid three times on the advice of his adviser Valerie Jarrett, who has no security background.
The Daily Mail says it has seen a copy of the book, to be published today, and that it claims Jarrett was worried that a failed attempt to capture Bin Laden could have a negative impact on the president's approval ratings.
Citing an un-named Special Ops source, Miniter claims raids on the Abbotobad compound in Pakistan were cancelled in January, February and March 2011 before his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton finally convinced Obama to go ahead in May.
Miniter even alleges that Obama almost cancelled the May raid, the day before it went ahead in a "fourth moment of indecision". The White House said that poor weather conditions caused a delay at this stage but Miniter claims to have checked records and found that conditions were "ideal".

When Miniter's allegations first surfaced in July, the Mail pointed out that his account was at odds with a New Yorker magazine account of the raid which said that Obama wasn't even given the option to attack Bin Laden until March.
Last week, a new attack ad surfaced on YouTube which, in an echo of the Swift Boat video which scuppered John Kerry's presidential bid in 2004, featured former servicemen alleging that Obama had taken the credit for the raid unfairly.
